OBJECTIVE
Save a yacht with a unique history! The Askoy II was not only one of the
biggest yachts ever built in Belgium, but in the sixties and seventies
it was the flagship of the Belgian yachting fleet and, last but not
least, once belonged to two very well-known Belgians. First the
architect Hugo Van Kuyck, a student of Horta’s, who designed dozens of
major buildings including the head office of Fortis Bank (formerly
Generale Bankmaatschappij) in Brussels. During the Second World War he
served as a volunteer officer in the American military engineers. In
this post he contributed to the design of the landing places in Normandy
at the end of the war.
The yacht was later bought by
Jacques Brel, who sailed away to the
Marquesas Islands on it. It now lies stranded and abandoned on the west
coast of New Zealand.
Final destination and future:
Once it is back in Belgium, the Askoy II will be taken to a maritime
location where it will be restored as part of a project for the
long-term unemployed. Consultations on this have been going on at
ministerial level. The ultimate purpose is to return the boat to the
water. It would be used primarily to give deprived people, youngsters
especially, the opportunity to sail. Perhaps even to the Marquesas
Islands?
As a piece of our maritime heritage, the Askoy II will become
an
ambassador for our country
(and for the sponsors too). It will take part
in annual gatherings of sailing vessels all over Europe, and beyond.
Target date:
In 2008, the Askoy II was successfully brought back to Belgium, to the port of
Ostend. Restoration will be
completed in five years, ready for the boat’s fiftieth anniversary.
NOTRE PROPOS
Rendez la vie à un bateau légendaire ! Askoy II n’est pas seulement l’un des
plus grands voiliers construits en Belgique : dans les années 60 / 70, il était
le fleuron de la flotte de plaisance belge. En outre, il a été la propriété de
deux grands noms belges des Arts. Le premier fut l’architecte Hugo Van Kuyck,
élève de Horta, qui conçut nombre d’édifices remarquables, dont le siège de la
Société Génarle de Banque à Bruxelles est l’un des plus beaux exemples. Vers la
fin de la seconde guerre mondiale, engagé comme officier volontaire dans les
rangs des troupes du Génie de l’armée américaine, il contribua activement à la
conception des plateformes de débarquement en Normandie. Plus tard, ce fut
Jacques Brel qui acheta le bateau et prit la mer à son bord jusqu’aux Marquises.
Aujourd’hui, ce voilier magnifique est échoué et abandonné sur une plage de la
côte ouest de Nouvelle-Zélande.
Notre objectif final :
Dès son retour en Belgique, Askoy II sera confié à un chantier maritime en vue
de sa restauration complète, dans le cadre d’une mise au travail de chômeurs de
longue durée. Des négociations ont été ouvertes avec les pouvoirs publics et
ministres de tutelle. Askoy II reprendra donc la mer! Il offrira alors
l’occasion de naviguer aux plus démunis, particulièrement des jeunes – pourquoi
pas jusqu’aux Marquises?
Askoy II sera patrimoine navigant et ambassadeur de notre pays – auquel les
sponsors seront associés. Il participera aussi aux rencontres des grands
voiliers et gréements, en Europe et ailleurs.
Date tentative :
En 2008, l'
Askoy II est retournè en Belgique (le port d' Ostende). Sa restauration devrait prendre quelque 5
années, il serait remis à l’eau pour son 50e anniversaire !
DOELSTELLING
Red een jacht met een unieke geschiedenis! De Askoy II is niet alleen één
van de grootste jachten ooit in Belgie gebouwd, het was in de jaren 60 en 70 het
vlaggenschip van de Belgische jachtvloot en last but not least, het schip
behoorde ooit aan twee zeer bekende Belgen. Vooreerst de architect Hugo Van
Kuyck, leerling van Horta, die tientallen belangrijke gebouwen ontwierp waarvan
het hoofdkwartier van Fortis (ex Generale Bankmij) te Brussel een goed voorbeeld
is. Tijdens Wereldoorlog II was hij als vrijwilliger officier in het Amerikaans
leger (genietroepen). In die functie leverde hij een bijdrage aan het ontwerpen
van de landingsplaatsen in Normandie op het einde van de tweede wereldoorlog.
Daarna kocht Jacques Brel het jacht en trok er mee naar de Markiezen. Nu ligt
het gestrand en verlaten op de Westkust van Nieuw Zeeland.
Eindbestemming en toekomst:
Eens in België wordt de Askoy II op een maritieme site geplaatst waar de
restauratie zal gebeuren, in het kader van een project voor de tewerkstelling
van langdurig werklozen. Hiervoor is er overleg op ministerieel niveau contacten
gelegd. Uiteindelijk doel wordt het terug in de vaart brengen van het schip .
Hierbij willen we de Askoy II vooral gebruiken om kansarmen, vooral jongeren, de
kans te geven om te zeilen. Waarom niet naar de Markiezen Eilanden?
Als varend erfgoed wordt de Askoy II een ambassadeur voor ons land (en dus ook
voor de sponsors). Het jacht zal deelnemen aan jaarlijkse bijeenkomsten van
grote zeilschepen in heel Europa ... en daarbuiten.
Streefdatum:
De Askoy II werd in 2008 succesvol naar België teruggebracht, momenteel in de
haven van Oostende. De restauratie wordt voltooid
binnen de 5 jaar, voor de vijftigste verjaardag van het schip
